How do you tell the story of an organization built from three separate histories, decades of achievement, and a mission that has touched thousands of lives?
For Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network, the answer was a custom-designed history wall that transformed years of organizational milestones into one cohesive visual experience.
Created by Friedman Fine Art, this impressive history timeline wall brings together three distinct organizational histories through photography, significant dates, custom graphics, and dimensional elements.
The result is much more than a chronological display. It is a permanent celebration of the people, purpose, and achievements that define Gift of Hope.
Gift of Hope: A Legacy of Saving Lives and Inspiring Hope
Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network is a nonprofit organization dedicated to coordinating organ and tissue donation throughout northern Illinois and northwest Indiana.
Originally incorporated in 1986 as the Regional Organ Bank of Illinois, the organization began operations in 1987. Since then, Gift of Hope has grown into an important resource for hospitals, donor families, transplant recipients, and communities throughout the region.
Its history includes remarkable milestones:
1986–1987: Incorporation and the beginning of operations.
1990: Expansion into tissue donation services.
2002: Adoption of the Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network name.
2012: Achievement of a Guinness World Record for organ donor registrations in a single day.
2022: Surpassing 30,000 life-saving organs recovered for transplantation.
2024: Establishment of the Gift of Hope Organ Donor Care Center at Rush University Medical Center.

The Design Challenge: Bringing Three Histories into One Timeline
One of the most interesting aspects of the Gift of Hope history wall project was the challenge of combining three organizational histories into one unified presentation.
Gift of Hope’s history involved the merger of three original charitable organizations, each contributing to the institution’s development and identity.
Rather than creating three separate displays, Friedman Fine Art collaborated with Gift of Hope’s leadership to identify the most meaningful milestones and weave them into a single historical narrative.
The project began with discussions about the organization’s heritage, defining accomplishments, important people, and the events that shaped its mission.
The design also had to accommodate a substantial architectural feature: a wall approximately 31 feet wide and 8 feet tall, with a slight curve.
This expansive surface offered an exceptional opportunity to create a history timeline wall that would become a defining feature of the interior environment.
By thoughtfully organizing the content, the design connects individual events while preserving the larger story of the organization.
A Custom History Wall Designed with Depth, Movement, and Meaning
An effective history wall design should do more than arrange dates and photographs. It should complement the architecture, reflect the organization’s identity, and invite viewers to explore.
For Gift of Hope, Friedman Fine Art developed a nature-inspired design incorporating the organization’s preferred colors, typography, and imagery.
Subtle patterns resembling ripples across water create a sense of movement and connection throughout the display.
The installation combines digitally printed seamless wallcovering with dimensional printed elements mounted over the background.
The wallcovering carries the primary visual composition, including historical information, typography, graphics, and selected photographs. Raised printed Sintra panels add dimension, creating layers that bring important images and milestones forward.
This combination offers several advantages: a unified visual appearance, depth without overwhelming the content, and an engaging presentation that can be experienced both from a distance and up close.
The design incorporates historical photographs, images of the organization’s founders, and visual references related to organ donation.
Together, these elements transform a long organizational history into an accessible and memorable experience.

Beyond the Timeline: Creating a Complete Organizational Environment
The Gift of Hope project demonstrates how history walls can become part of a larger environmental graphics program.
In addition to the timeline wall, Friedman Fine Art developed an extensive collection of custom artwork and interior graphics throughout the organization’s Itasca, Illinois facility.
The overall program included nature photography, original paintings, custom murals, dimensional mission statement graphics, a wall explaining the donation process, and a donor recognition display.
These visual elements work together to communicate the organization’s mission while creating a welcoming and meaningful environment.
A history wall explains where an organization has been. A mission display communicates why its work matters. A donor recognition wall honors the people who help make that mission possible.
When thoughtfully integrated, these displays create an organizational identity that visitors, employees, and supporters can experience throughout a facility.

Why History Walls Are Especially Meaningful for Nonprofit Organizations
For nonprofits, history is often inseparable from mission.
Every milestone represents people who contributed their time, leadership, resources, or support. Every expansion reflects an opportunity to serve additional individuals or communities.
A custom nonprofit history wall can help communicate these achievements in ways that annual reports and printed materials cannot.
Preserving an Organization’s Legacy
Photographs, founding stories, historical documents, and key accomplishments can be preserved in a permanent display that keeps the organization’s heritage visible.
Strengthening Employee and Volunteer Connections
A history timeline helps employees and volunteers understand the organization’s origins and appreciate the work that came before them.
This sense of continuity can reinforce pride, shared purpose, and organizational identity.

Creating Meaningful Visitor Experiences
Visitors, community partners, donors, and prospective supporters can quickly understand an organization’s mission and achievements through an engaging visual timeline.
Instead of simply reading about its accomplishments, they experience its story within the physical environment.
Celebrating the People Behind the Mission
For organizations like Gift of Hope, the most powerful stories are ultimately about people.
Founders, staff, volunteers, donor families, and community partners all contribute to a legacy that extends far beyond individual milestones.
A thoughtfully designed history wall recognizes those contributions while reminding viewers that the organization’s story continues.
